If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I bought a second one..

Meet the 125$ GS400. Garaged but has not run in 4 years. Tires are newish, new chain and sproket. Always garages, never dropped.

Bought it tonight but haven fetched it yet.

Nice one! What'd that be... an '83 or later? It's got the "fancy" bodywork :p

Those are great little bikes. Only two things not to like IMHO. A bit of a heavy clutch pull and the odd ball choke mechanism. You need three hands to start it as the choke knob is on the carb rail and you have to hold it out while simultaneously pulling in clutch and thumbing the go button :) I used a set of vice grips to hold the choke on.

Other than that they are bags of fun, light and flickable, obviously not super powered but entertaining.

Enjoy.

I have an easy solution to the clutch + choke fun... make an adaptor like I did to replace the choke lever on the carb, get a left control block from a later GSX of some sort with the choke lever on it, and you can run another throttle cable from there to your carb and have a 'bar mounted choke... easy :D

On my 1980 I just pull the choke knob and it stays on choke until I push it back in..

Yes it's a 1983. Is the motor 100% the same as my 1980?

No.

Its better :D It probably has the upgrades in it. such as better exhaust rockers that don't score the cam's and a two piece clutch pushrod that doesn't wear out the oil seal.

What does the engine code start with ?

GS40x is 1st generation and K,,,,, is the next gen.

All black engines I've seen have been the next gen.

Good find.

Unless I miss my guess he's a Canuck or overseas.Motor is the same as the 80 exept for black paint.Great buy on a great bike!

Montreal Quebec. Canadian, Just north of me :)

Three hands.
Why not open up the headlamp and delete the clutch safety switch?
Only one of my bikes still has one that is in working/stock configuration and it WILL get changed.
I keep forgetting to rectify that until I go to start it.

BTW, nice STEAL on the second bike. I would be all over it also!

Where are the fuse located on this bike?

I only found a cylindrical shaped one by the battery.

Reason I ask is that I turn the key to the on position (with a new battery of course) and there is nothing happening. No lights, no start etc...

Howerver I nonnected both poles of the selenoid together and the motor turns over (but no spark of course)

That's the one! There's only the one main fuse and it's the old glass style.

Replace that with a new inline blade style, should be 15amp I believe.

The old glass ones are far too unreliable.

Off to Canadian Tire yet again!

I did swap the wheels between the 83 and the 80 because the tires on the 83 were far better and I daily the 80.

Sounds like a good plan on the tyres!

Speaking of tyres it looks like my rear's starting to get a little low on tread in the centre already... I've been trying my best to get to the curvy bits as much as possible but commuting kills it...

I've got less than 6000km's on the rear tyre so I guess the dual sports don't last so long on the road! Oh well...

will it start in gear??? or does it have to be in nuetral?

Pete: you advice was spot on. :D

I replaced the fuse setup with a newer style and the bike fired right up.

It seems to idle pretty well. I had it hooked up to my truck to start it so I could no go for a ride.

Tomorrow I will install the battery from the 1980 bike(if it fits) and go for a ride.

Glad to hear it :)

Pretty sure you'll be right with the battery... enjoy!

Well to repeat myslef from Thumper88's thread...

I put a battery in it today, cranked right up and it seemed to ride nicely with a slight part throttle misses.

I rode 4-5 blocks then I hit a red light and it quit running at idle. Wouldnt start back up.. I let it sit for 5 minutes then let it roll and I bump started it but I had to hit the gas and keep it revving otherwise it would die.

It seems to run great at WOT but as soon as I have to slow down it stalls.

I had to make it home while reving it at 5k the whole way.

I think it's a a carb issue... and I'm def not in a carb pulling kind of mood tonight.

Gonna buy new plugs tomorrow and *maybe* I'll pull the carbs and inspect them.
