  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have decided to let my old thread die and start a new one here in the performance section, but rest assured that there will be both performance and appearance mods going on.

Due to breakneck changes in living situations my bike ended up living a sad fate outdoors under a tarp this winter (I am happy/crapping my pants to announce that my GF and I are closing on a house on monday, and it has a garage). And it wasn't a very pleasant winter at that. The only consolation I gave myself was that I would make it up to her in the spring. Well, the time has come to make good on that.

Some of you may remember that this is what she looked like last year:

This picture is very flattering. Upon closer inspection one can see that the rattle can paint is deeply flawed (as is some of my bondo/fiberglass work). The engine is cruddy looking. It usually only runs on three cylinders. And there are plenty other issues.

I also never much cared for the red.

So, last fall I scored a used motor on ebay for $40 with the intention of building a good looking/working motor out of the two. There is more info about that engine (such as the bonus Dyna ignition that it came with) in another thread.

Anyway, the first thing to happen was to give the carbs a good dippin and a whippin. Here is the end result of that laborious endeavor:

Of course one of the air mixture screws had it's slot shear off (no project would be complete without something akin to this happening). I have another mostly set of carbs in a box somewhere, the problem is that at the moment just about everything I own is in a box somewhere. But the mixture screw appears to be stuck where it needs to be, so no rush.

Here is the offending screw (literally and figuratively):

I installed the carbs, dyna ignition and new plug caps and plugs and did some jet tweaking. Did a little massaging and then went for a ride.

Here is some background info on this bike and me. When I bought her, I had never ridden anything like her, so I had no benchmark for performance. Sure it was at least as fast as most cars, and I had no problem keeping up with my buddies' older Harleys, but that isn't much of an accomplishment. She seemed slow to me, but I also knew that she was old and heavy. A buddy of mine has a 79 1000 that he spent last year dialing in his in. I rode it at the end of the season and immediately felt like crap. His was at least twice as fast as mine. I understand it being faster, it is a 1000 and mine is a 750, but I was sure it shouldn't be that much faster.

Cut to last week. My bike is at least 75% faster than it was last year. It used to struggle to get above 85/90 on the freeway. Now at 80 it is still pulling mad strong. I didn't get on the freeway so I don't know what she is capable of at the top, but I sure am smiling at the reds now. Granted it is nothing compared to the speed triple I rode last year, but for a 30 year old bike it has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

So, what do you do when you finally get your motor pulling like you want it to? If you're at all like me, you take it apart.

Here is the prepared set of parts from the donor engine getting ready to be installed:

Anyway, it took a good three days to install these parts. I also painted the main cases and cylinders of the engine black. As well as a new case bolt kit (which is worth its weight in gold), did a valve check (some are getting close, and will be replaced in a few weeks), various other small jobs. I also went with header wrap. I like the way it looks, and my old pipes were starting to look a little worse for wear. By the way, unlike the bolt set, the steel zip ties that come with the wrap aren't even worth their weight in crap.

As I said, I was never crazy about the red, and I need to do some better finish work to the tank. Please be aware that this is a temporary paint job to see how I will feel about a blue scheme. This paint is very rough. I have an HVLP gun in the mail, and will be attempting a more professional job in the coming weeks.

Also on the horizon are steel brake lines, 530 conversion and new rear tire.

As you can see, it began to gently sprinkle while I was taking these, so I had to wrap it up. The blue looks better in person. Tomorrow I will try to take some pics in the sunlight. Everything looks better in sunlight.

it's looking really good! i always dig those engine paint jobs.. except for a few i have seen that were.. ahem. not very good.

always dug that cafe look and you've hit a pretty nice pose for it!
 
Shes lookin dead sexah in that blue BG, i like it better than the read meself. What about a reverse tho? I always dug white bikes :)
 
I actually toyed with (and still do) the idea of a blue frame with white tins and blue stripes. One thing I am almost sure of is that whatever I end up with I am going to keep the same style Suzuki S on the sides of the tank.

Sad to see the old thread die Beergood, it was a great read.

Love the new thread though. I always enjoy your 'pictorials' - very entertaining.
I would have thought that the bike would be slower now with the blue paint - everyone knows that red is faster - LOL :D

Yep, red is faster, blue is for wimps. But, as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I like the new engine look, does it run on four cylinders now?
 
Jeez Beergood I just noticed your rear tyre. Is that slick in the centre or is it just the pic?
 
Yeah, it's bangin on all cylinders now.

And yeah, the tire is getting a little slick in the center, which is why it is on the list. It's not as bad as that pic looks, but it will need to be changed soon.

I kinda feel like red is a clich?, and suzukis look good in blue. Just gotta find the right combo. As for red being faster, don't tell Richard Petty.

Reminds me of a great line by Richard Petty. Someone once asked him when the first ever car race was. His reply - "just after they built the second car".

Pretty sure Petty always had blue and red, he wasn't taking any chances.

Black and brass is however, THE fastest colour combo known to man. Just so ya all know :P\\:D/
 
I get bored easily. I am already starting to wonder what it will look like in a different color. I imagine when I get my spray rig set up I will be spraying it different colors often.

Maybe I should just buy a couple of extra tanks and fab some more tail sections. That way I can dress her to however I feel that day.

If the GF can justify a whole shoe collection for those reasons, why can't I?
 
hey, bg, quick question, have you done a reg/rec conversion? if it is documented, could you direct me to it? i have a 78 750 with the seperate reg and rec and want to convert...thanks!!
 
Wasn't it orange at some point? Orange/white is the way to go, IMHO. ;-)
